In this essay, I shall briefly examine the main advantages and disadvantages of radio, TV and books as means of communicating information.

I think that the main advantage of radio is that it is cheap. Radios are cheaper than TVs and the equipment needed is also cheaper than that required for making TV news and documentary programmes. This makes radio particularly useful in poorer areas of the world, where access to information is needed, but resources are more limited. The main disadvantage of radio is that it can only transmit sound, not pictures.

TV has the advantage of being able to provide both sound and visual information, but, as noted above, it is more expensive than radio. The provision of visual information means that viewers can see how things are done, rather than relying on audio instructions which are more likely to be unclear. TV also means that inpiduals can be identified by their appearance, which most people find easier than identifying people by voice alone.

Books seem to be generally better for providing information in more detail on subjects. This can make them better than TV or radio news, which tend to be short programmes providing the most essential information in a short space of time. With books, it is also easy to refer to information, provided that the book has a good index. The main disadvantage of books is that they take longer to read than it takes to watch a TV programme or listen to a radio programme.

To summarize, each of these three media has advantages and disadvantages. I consider books to be the best, but it is probably best for most people to use a mixture of sources when getting information.
